Stimulating the Natural Healing Abilities
Acupuncture is the practice of stimulating specific points on the body, by either
needling or electrical impulse, to promote natural healing, control pain and
normalize function. Our Physiotherapists and Naturopath use acupuncture as part of specific treatments, and within the scope of their respective practices.
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is over 3,000 years old, and is associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine. Very fine, sterile needles are placed into relevant areas of the body, and are left in position for up to 20 minutes. Many patients find acupuncture provides some relief immediately, while others find that the pain becomes more manageable after a few treatments.
Generally, a minimum of six treatments is recommended.
MODERN SCIENTIFIC APPROACH
We practice Pragmatic Western Acupuncture, which uses trigger points and regional points, as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine points. There is an increasing body of solid scientific research showing the effects of acupuncture on the body, including its regulation of nerves and the release of a myriad of neurotransmitters and hormones.
Needling and acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body's own biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
The most common conditions treated by acupuncture include:
- Acute and Chronic pain
- Neck & Back pain
- Jaw Joint pain (TMJ)
- Headaches & Migraines
- Neuralgia
- Arthritis & other joint conditions
- Sinusitis
- Poor circulation
